Next Step: A project that created sustainable change in 2024. Here we share some of the results and lessons learned from this year’s project.
One thousand participants in 2024
During the year, we trained over 1,000 entrepreneurs. They learned everything from business planning and financial management to digital marketing. As a result, participants developed both as individuals and business owners. Additionally, almost everyone who was accepted completed the training. In the next step, a large majority implemented new business routines that now contribute to stability and growth.
Mentorship and practical experience
Through industry-specific mentorship and business visits, participants gained valuable practical knowledge. This in turn strengthened their skills in product development and business expansion – crucial steps for long-term success.
Access to capital
An important part of the project is building bridges between small business owners and financial institutions. Therefore, nearly 900 entrepreneurs gained access to important loan opportunities during the year, which in turn resulted in capital acquisition equivalent to nearly 4.8 million Kenyan shillings.
Digital Competence
500 of the participants also received training in digital marketing, e-commerce, and financial management. In a world where digitalization is becoming increasingly important, this represents a crucial advantage, as it enables them to reach new markets and streamline their operations.
Benefits for entire communities
Next Step has not only made a big difference for those who participated, but for their entire communities. Through education, mentorship, and access to resources, entrepreneurs have gained a solid foundation to build upon and hopefully they can spread knowledge further and even hire employees.
The future after Next Step
Although we have now concluded this year’s project, it only marks the beginning of a long-term development journey for participants and their communities. Here’s what awaits them going forward:
• Mentorship and networks: Both entrepreneurs and mentors continue to provide support and inspiration to each other even after the project ends.
• Economic resilience: Participants now have diversified income sources and digital tools which makes them better equipped for the future.
• Sustainability: Through environmentally friendly methods and digital inclusion, knowledge spreads to broader networks, creating a positive chain reaction.
Additional lessons learned
The project has also generated insights and lessons that can help future initiatives within Hand in Hand:
1. Integrated digitalization
We have introduced the digital modules in other projects thanks to their success, which strengthens Hand in Hand’s entire operation.
2. Shared knowledge within groups
An important part of the project was informal knowledge sharing, where participants inspired each other. This demonstrates the power of collaborative learning.
At Implema, we are proud to be part of this journey toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.
