Many SAP BW environments have grown in 10. 15. 20 years and carry heavy code and transformation logic. In Implema Talks, Johan Söderström talks to Johan Berg about how SAP Business Data Cloud can be a practical way forward. The key is to start with strategy and current situation. Not with all components at once. By packaging logic as data products and building a clearer data foundation, you can approach a single source of truth and create a clean base for analysis. AI and sharing to Databricks or Snowflake. Gradually and with a focus on business value.
Johan Berg, Business Development Manager at Implema’s SAP business area, focusing on SAP’s strategy, development, and how customers can practically take the next step in their data journey.
It sounds obvious. But in practice, it is often the most difficult. Johan Berg’s message is that customers running SAP Business Warehouse and wanting to move towards SAP Business Data Cloud gain many advantages by first setting a strategic direction for the upcoming transformation. What is the current situation in SAP BW? What do you want to achieve? Which parts of Business Data Cloud components and you absolutely do not have to start using everything at the same time.
Many SAP BW installations carry a lot of programmed logic and often have a history that may not be relevant today. There are data transformations, code, and special adaptations that may have emerged over a long period of time. To move forward, you need to “decode” that logic and translate it into future data products.
SAP offers its own predefined data products, but you can also build your own. By thinking along those lines, you can establish your own future data structure that enables analysis and becomes the modern “truth.” This implies a shift from legacy to more standard, which in itself can be a challenge. But it is also a valuable “cleansing operation” that makes the environment easier to manage, the data easier to understand, and reduces dependence on individuals.
Here, the pieces come together. When data becomes more standardized and understandable for different users, the next step becomes easier. You can then apply AI capabilities to your data with SAP’s tools in SAP BDC, or share data with Databricks or Snowflake for further analysis and AI initiatives there. There is much of the value in achieving a clean data model.
